WHAT IS CUSTOMS CLEARANCE?

Customs Clearance is a mandatory process that all goods entering or leaving Great Britain have to go through.

It enables HMRC to account for Revenue collection, safety & security. It also ensures GB consumer protection is up held and documents which goods come in and out of Great Britain.

In short, Customs Clearance is a process usually undertaken by a Customs Agent on behalf of the Importer. This ensures all documents and calculations are completed correctly at each stage of the process. Need to appoint a Customs Agent? Look no further, we’ve got you!

What is Customs Clearance
YOU MUST HAVE AN EORI NUMBER

You need to have an EORI number if you wish to trade with any other country, no matter the size of your business. This is not something a Customs Agent can do for you.

An EORI (Economic Operator Registration & Identification) number is a 12 digit number beginning with ‘GB’. It’s a mandatory number HMRC use to identify companies that import or export goods.

If you are a VAT registered business your EORI number will be linked to your VAT number, but you will have to apply for it. If your business is not VAT registered don’t worry, you can still apply for it. So, visit www.gov.uk/eori to apply for your EORI number online.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMODITY CODES

It’s imperative Commodity codes are documented correctly.

Incorrect Commodity codes could result in fines and goods being seized at the border. This is because Commodity codes dictate the rate of Duty you must pay when Importing goods into Great Britain. They also identify goods classified as ‘restricted’.

To ensure your goods aren’t seized or delayed at the border and costly fines are avoided, it’s best to appoint a Customs Agent like AMCO. We’ll take the guesswork and uncertainty out of the process. To clarify, we’ll ensure your customs clearances are handled compliantly, leaving you to concentrate on your core business.  If in doubt, ASK our team of specialists!

CALCULATING DUTY & VAT

Calculating Duty and VAT can be complicated, especially for first-time Importers.

How much Duty you pay will depend on the rate at which your goods will be charged via its associated Commodity code. That percentage rate is then used against the sum of your product costs, insurance costs and freight costs.

How much VAT you pay will be dictated by the cost of your goods, shipping costs, insurance and Import Duty. However, if you are a VAT registered company you can claim the VAT back at a later date. Simply use your EORI number and claim back just like you would with any other company purchase.

DON’T LEAVE DUTY & VAT CALCULATIONS TO CHANCE. APPOINT AMCO AS YOUR CUSTOMS AGENT!

IMPORT LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

An import licence is not needed to import most industrial goods into Great Britain. However, you may need a licence or certificate if you import controlled items such as animals, animal products, plants and plant products. This also includes medicines, hazardous chemicals, nuclear material and offensive weapons or firearms.

A Customs Agent will be able to identify if your goods require a licence or certificate and advise accordingly. This is an area of Customs Clearance that should not be overlooked. In other words, it could result in fines and goods being seized.
