Earlier this month AMCO welcomed Mel Hall from Acorns Children’s Hospice to AMCO Park. We discussed how AMCO can further help support the amazing work they do, learnt more about their work, and heard a first-hand experience from one of our own employees which absolutely confirmed it’s a charity well worth supporting.

ACORNS CHILDREN’S HOSPICE

Acorns Children’s Hospice provides babies, children and young people aged 0-18 years who have life-limited or life-threatening conditions and associated complex needs with a network of specialist palliative nursing care and support.

A parent never imagines their child will be diagnosed with such conditions, but when the unimaginable happens, Acorns steps in. Acorns help families cope at every stage of their child’s life and beyond, wherever and whenever they need it.

ACORNS CHILDREN’S HOSPICE
The need for children’s hospice care never stops. Which is why Acorns Children’s Hospice is there to provide specialist palliative care 24/7, 365 days a year. Understanding family time is precious when a child’s life is limited. Acorns do everything they can to help create lasting memories and provide family support when needed.

Acorns have cared for over 700 children in the past year alone, supporting 945 families across the West Midlands, including those who are bereaved – AMCO are super proud to have supported Acorns to date.

LISA’S STORY

Lisa Abnett, a Senior Traffic Controller in AMCO’s UK Logistics department shares her first-hand experience with Acorns Children’s Hospice.

“As a family, we felt so lucky to have had Acorns at our side during the most difficult time of our lives.”

Lisa continued, “It’s so important for the whole family to have excellent support available when a son, daughter, sister or brother has a life-limited illness. And of course, it’s vital that child in need has the chance to make the most of every day – Acorns really made a difference for us!

Sadly, 22 years ago at 8 years of age, Lisa’s daughter, Kayleigh, lost her battle with Chronic Lung Disease. It was of course a very distressing time for the whole family. Thankfully, Acorns were there to help.

“Acorns helped in so many ways. Their support enabled us to recharge our batteries when needed, both physically and mentally. We could get a full night’s sleep, which meant we were more energised to cope and continue with the day-to-day care of Kayleigh – something Kelly, Kayleigh’s older Sister, greatly benefitted.”

Acorns really are just a phone call away. “They offer emergency care, which was a godsend when I had an accident. Acorns were there to turn to in just one phone call. I just knew Kayleigh would carry on receiving the 24-hour care she needed, it relieved the stress and gave me great peace of mind.”

Lisa, Kayleigh and the rest of the family were invited to numerous family days at Aston Villa Football Club and Acorns Children’s Hospice (Walsall) where Kayleigh visited frequently. “Acorns is such an amazing environment, full of joy and laughter, and is all about living each day to the max, making the happiest of memories together.”

“We didn’t feel like we were in it on our own. Acorns were there offering support for the whole family, for as long as we wanted or needed. The door is never closed at Acorns. To this day, we know we can visit their beautiful, peaceful gardens whenever we want.”

“Knowing AMCO have chosen Acorns Children’s Hospice as this year’s charity is amazing. I know we will put our all into raising as much money as we can for such a great cause.”
